New Taste Essay in New England Review!

| Taste: A Book of Small Bites

In August 2022, Columbia University Press will publish Taste: A Book of Small Bites, my second nonfiction book. Taste looks at the sweet, the sour, the bitter, the salty, and umami through an interdisciplinary lens and considers the ways that this often overlooked sense informs poetry and fiction, theater, film, opera, philosophy, and religion. You can read more about Taste here.

As I count down the months until the release of the book, I’m excited to say that another of the essays from Taste has just been published in New England Review, one of my very favorite literary journals of all time. This particular piece reflects on coffee and Edward Hopper; it comes from the bitter section of Taste. You can read “Small Cups of Shadow” here.
